Steaming
Cooking food using steam from boiling water without submerging the food itself. One of the healthiest cooking methods — preserves nutrients, color, and natural flavor.
When to Use This Technique
- Cooking vegetables while preserving nutrients
- Steaming fish and seafood gently
- Asian dumplings and bao buns
- Reheating leftovers without drying them
Temperature Guide
Temperature Range
212°F / 100°C (steam temperature)
Visual Cue
Vigorous steam inside covered pot
Readiness Test
Vegetables turn bright and tender — pierce easily with fork
Step-by-Step Instructions
Fill pot with 1-2 inches of water — do not let water touch the food
Tip
Too much water boils up into food. Too little runs dry mid-cook.
Bring water to rolling boil before placing food in steamer
Tip
Food should hit steam immediately for best results
Arrange food in single layer in steamer basket
Tip
Leave space between pieces for steam circulation
Common Mistake
Overcrowding blocks steam and causes uneven cooking
Cover tightly and start timer
Tip
Lifting the lid repeatedly releases steam and extends cooking time
Check doneness: vegetables tender-crisp, fish flakes, dumplings cooked through
Tip
Broccoli: 4-5min. Green beans: 5-7min. Fish fillet: 8-12min. Dumplings: 10-12min.
Remove carefully — escaping steam is extremely hot
Tip
Tilt lid away from you when opening to direct steam away
Visual Cues to Look For
- Green vegetables turn brilliant, vibrant green
- Fish turns opaque and flakes at touch
- Dumplings swell slightly and skin becomes translucent
- Food looks plump and moist, not shriveled
